A few years back, my wife and I took a short vacation to St. Louis. While there a few oddities drew my attention.
While perusing the offerings of a second hand shop in the Delmar Loop, I began to feel watched. Looking about, I found no living soul behind me. Then my gaze settled on these disembodied eyes glaring at me. I don’t know why, but their peculiar look, hidden in a secluded corner of the store has always stuck with me. I wonder if they maintain secret watch still today.
Elsewhere in the same shop, I spotted this festively dressed, little pumpkin man. Determining what emotion his gourdish face is trying to convey isn’t entirely clear. Has he been startled by some unexpected atrocity just witnessed, or fearful at one he’s about to perpetrate.
The final item of interest in the shop is this little curio. I have no idea what it’s supposed to be or to represent. It has a vaguely ALICE IN WONDERLAND feel to it, but I don’t specifically recognize it. Either way, it has a quality of strangeness about it I found intriguing.
